True North: Trust Jesus
Gospel of Matthew – various scriptures
This past week, our church was buzzing with kids for this summer’s True North VBS program. All week long, our VBS leaders hammered home one simple lesson: “Trust Jesus!”
Each day’s Bible lesson took our kids into a different stretch of life’s wilderness:
- when we wonder about big questions
- when we feel alone and invisible
- when we feel powerless
- when we need hope in the darkest moments
- when we need help for the road ahead
We learned that for each stage of life, our compass is fixed on five promises from Matthew’s Gospel:
- wisdom for the seeker (7:24)
- rest for the weary (11:28)
- courage for the fearful (14:27)
- hope for the whole world (12:21)
- Jesus’ own assurance, “I am with you always” (28:20)
Watching those truths settle into young hearts reminded me that trusting Jesus isn’t a children’s lesson we outgrow. It’s an essential truth for every season of life.
Our kids will keep facing questions, loneliness, weakness, discouragement, and obstacles. They need guides such as parents, grandparents, and seasoned believers, who will hike beside them and say, “I’ve learned to trust Jesus here, and you can too.”
As we wrap up five energetic days, the camp décor comes down, but the journey of trusting Jesus continues. Let’s fix our own eyes on Him and become living examples who point young hearts to the One who is our True North.
Of course, none of this week’s adventure could have happened without the many volunteers who prepared activities, led songs, acted in skits, prayed with kids, cleaned up glitter and slime, played games, prepared snacks, donated supplies, and tackled countless other jobs that kept things running smoothly.
Thank you for giving your time, energy, love and your joyful shouts of “Trust Jesus!”
